The Team

The Banking & Payments team is part of the Kraken Treasury team, under the Finance organization and is responsible for all Kraken’s partnerships with Banks & Payments providers worldwide. We source, manage, maintain and strengthen partnerships with banks, payments partners, and key financial institutions to drive Kraken’s business growth and expansion in furtherance of our mission.

The team directly drives customer growth, revenues and transactional volumes on the Kraken platform and is a key stakeholder with the launch of new products and services in existing and new geographies.

Our team’s mission is to establish partnerships with financial institutions to make Kraken the most accessible, innovative and secure cryptocurrency ecosystem for everyone to access, transact and store cryptocurrency worldwide.

Kraken is growing and expanding. To help fuel this growth requires world class banking and payments relationships and infrastructure to enable our customers and clients to smoothly transact on the Kraken platform. In this role, we are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Banking & Payments Manager to lead, manage and prioritize the implementation of partnerships with both North & South American banks and payments providers.

The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in delivering seamless on-ramps, off-ramps, required payment rails, crypto banking services for Kraken products, services and for required business demand ensuring all transactions can be completed successfully. The ideal candidate will collaborate cross-functionally in the core geographies, source, structure and then manage these partnerships on an ongoing basis.

The Opportunity

Partnership & Relationship Management

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with all banks and payment partners across Canada, USA and Latin America.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for banking and payment partners, fostering collaboration and managing any issues that may arise.
  • Contribute to shaping and executing on Kraken’s banking & payments strategy and identify high-impact opportunities.
  • Work extensively with internal and external stakeholders to drive execution and continuous progress of all key projects and company wide initiatives.
  • Build an extensive banking & payments network and maintain meaningful relationships to stay on top of key trends and industry developments.
  • Proficiently communicate the value of working with Kraken to potential partners

Contract Management

  • Establish commercial relationships with all partners within timeframes required to support all product and market launches
  • Own, lead and negotiate all commercial contractual terms, agreements, and addendums with banking and payment partners to ensure favorable terms for Kraken.
  • Regularly review existing agreements to identify opportunities for improvement or renegotiation.
  • Articulate key value drivers and considerations for potential partnership opportunities in concise deal memos; build consensus across Leadership and the wider organization
  • Manage partnerships with an operational cadence–metrics and qualitative feedback–to ensure an effective working relationship that allows for continued operations and expansion of services

Treasury Management

  • Oversee, enable and provide required banking services to ensure smooth client transactions, optimize liquidity management ensuring timely and accurate processing of all client transactions at all times
  • Work closely with internal teams to streamline transaction workflows and resolve any issues related to client deposits and withdrawals across all products and services

Risk Management

  • Monitor and assess potential risks associated with existing banking partners, their impact to client transactions and proactively propose mitigating measures
  • Collaborate with the risk, security and audit teams to manage relevant assessments and strategies related to banking and payment processes

Compliance & Regulatory Oversight

  • Collaborate with legal, compliance, treasury, operations, product teams to onboard all banking and payments partners – ensuring Kraken’s adherence to all relevant regulations
  • Stay abreast of regulatory changes and compliance requirements related to banking and payments across the Americas

Skills You Should HODL

  • 5+ years of experience in banking, payments, transaction banking or financial services, with a focus on partnerships, relationship and account management in a hyper growth technology company
  • Proven track record of closing multiple high value partnership deals from origination through integration
  • Prior experience working with North & South American banks and payment partners.
  • Passion for, and knowledge of cryptocurrency markets and the unique challenges associated with banking services in the cryptocurrency environment
  • Capable builder of financial models, revenue projections, and business plans
  • Ability to travel regularly to meet banking and payments partners – at least 25% travel required
  • In-depth understanding of Canadian, US & LATAM cryptocurrency, banking, FX, and payments regulations, payment systems/rails, and financial compliance. Experience with BSA/AML/KYC and risk controls
  • Familiar with how corporate banks and financial institutions work and their decision makers. You’re excellent at managing these relationships and constantly creating opportunities to improve them
  • Exceptional commercial acumen, outstanding negotiator and product instinct. Able to independently negotiate most ideal terms with clear product vision and understanding in mind and can figure out the ideal operational and commercial process with every new partner
  • Strong ability to drive consensus and coordinate process with a diverse group of cross-functional stakeholders in finance, treasury, legal, product, engineering, operations, marketing, business development, M&A and beyond
