Head of Community Connectivity (SateNet)

Africa, Remote

Job Overview

We are seeking a highly entrepreneurial strategist and operator to lead Fedi’s Bitcoin-powered Internet Access Initiative, focused on delivering community-owned, low-cost internet solutions starting in Kenya and expanding across multiple countries.

This role blends business development, field operations, and scalable infrastructure strategy. The SateNet Lead will design deployment models, build local operational teams, and establish partnerships with community leaders, ISPs, technicians, and hardware installers.

This role is ideal for someone who has designed or launched internet or connectivity projects in low-income or underserved regions, and understands both the technical realities of internet deployment and the business/community activation side of scaling access models.

The ideal candidate can operate autonomously, build teams from the ground up, speak the language of local community trust and technical deployment, and turn pilots into repeatable, scalable models that can be replicated across Africa and beyond.

StateNet Overview

SateNet is Fedi’s initiative to bring low-cost, reliable internet access to rural users in Kenya, powered and paid for using the Fedi app. It represents one of Fedi’s most important real-world implementations: using Bitcoin and federated technology to make connectivity community-owned, affordable, and sustainable.

Your mission is to own SateNet end‑to‑end. First, make the initial SateNet site operational, sustainable, and widely used — ensuring users can reliably access and pay for the internet through the Fedi app. Then, turn that success into a repeatable, systemised model that can be replicated across other communities. You’ll serve as the field-to-product control loop — diagnosing issues, coordinating fixes across Product and Engineering, and orchestrating Communities on the ground. Once stable, you’ll productionise the model, oversee replication, and support the CEO in transitioning SateNet towards having independent governance and funding.

You balance hands-on field leadership with rigorous program management. You’re comfortable in low‑infrastructure environments, eager to learn the realities of last‑mile connectivity (mesh/satellite/relay, power, placement, uptime), and relentless about outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own SateNet outcomes for the initial site; set targets and deliver them.
  • Run the field operations plan (logistics, staffing, scheduling, vendor coordination).
  • Ensure connectivity design and uptime (mesh/satellite/relay choices, power strategy, placement, maintenance).
  • Ensure local operators are trained and end‑users are educated in our product; establish support workflows and escalation paths.
  • Specify and verify product changes; maintain a tight feedback loop with Product/Engineering.
  • Ensure on/off‑ramp availability and reliability in‑region; coordinate with the On/Off‑Ramps lead.
  • Build and maintain a single source of truth – including runbooks, SOPs, checklists, acceptance criteria, and FAQs.
  • Report weekly on KPIs, risks, and mitigations; hold post‑incident reviews and drive corrective actions.
  • Develop business models and cost frameworks that make connectivity affordable to low-income communities while ensuring sustainability.
  • Prepare donor‑ready materials (impact metrics, stories, budgets); host/guide donor visits.
  • Time‑to‑Operational: weeks from kickoff to stable operations within target window.
  • Utilization: DAU/WAU at site; repeat‑use rates; merchant participation; transaction volume trends.
  • Reliability: Uptime %, incident rate, and MTTR across connectivity and app workflows.
  • Training & Enablement: # trained users/merchants; proficiency rates; support ticket resolution time.
  • Playbook Readiness: v1/v2 playbooks shipped; deployment kit completeness; audit scores on new sites.
  • Capital & Transition: donor visits executed; diligence completed; NGO transition milestones met.

Requirements

  • 6+ years in business development with money/telecom/internet infrastructure, or connectivity leadership, with hands-on field leadership, ideally in low-income markets or underserved regions.
  • Track record turning struggling pilots into working programs and then into repeatable playbooks.
  • Proven experience launching or scaling internet or connectivity projects (community networks, micro-ISP models, satellite or mesh deployments).
  • Ability to speak both community language (trust, adoption, leadership) and technical language (bandwidth, relays, installation logistics, uptime management).
  • Strong program management (critical paths, RAID logs, risk control, vendor management).
  • Ability to translate field issues into actionable product requirements and verify fixes.
  • High‑trust partner wrangling: local leaders, vendors, NGOs, and government touchpoints.
  • Data fluency: define/track KPIs; build lightweight dashboards; make evidence‑based decisions.
  • Excellent written/spoken English; additional regional languages a plus.
  • Familiarity with Bitcoin/Lightning and on/off‑ramp concepts (or willingness to learn fast).
  • Strong relationship-building skills — able to spot natural community leaders and turn them into partners.

Location/Travel: This is a fully remote role, though being based in Africa is preferred given the need for regular travel to Kenya during launch. Travel will be frequent at first and lighter once operations stabilize.

Benefits

  • Competitive Salary Package as well as Stock Options.
  • Uncapped Paid Time Off with flexible field scheduling.
  • Travel across Africa and global events to build networks and lead deployments.
  • Access to leadership mentorship and strategic training resources.
